Call: Early Career Tagung 11./12.12.2025 »Gewalt, Chaos, Vernichtung? Kriegsdarstellungen in der Frühen Neuzeit«, Hamburg
23 May 2025
The University of Hamburg and the DFG-Centre for Advanced Studies »Imaginaria of Force« invite submissions for the international Early Career Conference »Violence, Chaos, Destruction: Depictions of War in the Early Modern Period«, which will take place on December 11 and 12, 2025 in the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg in Hamburg.
The conference’s aim is to give young scholars a platform to present their research topics about early modern war imagery. Of particular interest are connections to concepts of violence in the history of science viz. ideas, but also to the transformations of ancient heritage therein. Questions about political iconography as well as the effect and instrumentalization of these art works in the context of a visual rhetoric and propaganda are also of relevance. We invite submissions that discuss the tensions between the genesis of war depictions as an artistic problem and their specific impact on beholders. The conference will thus contribute to a more extensive understanding of a visual world which has seldom been comprehensively examined to date.
We particularly invite contributions from doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as master’s students in the final phase of their studies. Entries on early modern war imagery from neighbouring disciplines, such as cultural history or media theory, are also welcomed.
Please submit a short abstract (max. 400 words) for a presentation of approx. 20 minutes as well as a brief bio-bibliographic information to svenja.hasche"AT"uni-hamburg.de by July 31, 2025. Abstracts can be written in German or English. A passive understanding of both languages is required. We look forward to your submissions!
