The force cultivated in ink painting is more the force of weakness and softness rather than strength and hardness. This workshop is dedicated to the concept of force in East Asian aesthetic traditions. The Chinese art of brush painting reveals an aesthetic cultivation of force, which consists of knowing about strength while preserving weakness. The painter Jiang Sanshi and the philosopher Fabian Heubel will introduce this aesthetic cultivation through a performative combination of ink painting, music on the Chinese zither Qin and philosophical reflection.
Jiang Sanshi/蔣三石 studied philosophy and East Asian art history and works as an ink painter in Taipei, where she experiments with the aesthetics of Chinese "shanshui" painting (山水, mountain-water" painting) in nature.
Fabian Heubel has been working at the Institute for Chinese Literature and Philosophy at the Academia Sinica in Taipei since 2001 and is currently a visiting professor of classical and modern Chinese philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin.
