Forum »Designing the Energy Transition. Aesthetic, social and ecological challenges«
Description
The transdisciplinary forum „DESIGNING the Energy Transition“ („Energiewende GESTALTEN“) is dedicated to questions of design and the aesthetic effects of the current transition to green energy on the landscape. The aim is to go beyond the primarily technical and economic debates and to look at "energy landscapes" from different perspectives, thus opening up possibilities for envisioning sustainable landscape development. We ask the following questions: In which places, for instance, could wind turbines be better integrated into landscapes - and why? Where and for whom do they interfere with the aesthetic perception of landscapes? What is the relationship between the dimensions of meaning, function, and aesthetics of energy infrastructure? Can the large-scale construction of renewable energy projects such as wind and solar farms lead to aesthetically pleasing solutions?
We are convinced that a transdisciplinary reflection on future landscapes is a key to increasing the acceptance of the energy transition. This development can only be sustainable if its implementation in the design of the landscape is not perceived as a burden. We are opposed both to the complete rejection of renewable energy infrastructure and to a relativising, constructivist approach that declares landscape perception to be historically contingent and therefore irrelevant.
As art and cultural historians, we are aware that the perception and evaluation of landscapes is necessarily related to images, which in turn have historical, political, regional and socio-cultural dimensions. At the same time, we are convinced that these dimensions urgently need to be taken into account in our debates about the transformation of landscapes.
