New publication: Frank Fehrenbach: Giotto und die Physiker: Dynamiken des Bildes um 1300
12 December 2023
The painting of Giotto di Bondone (ca. 1267-1337) is characterized in a previously unknown way by physical forces within the picture: by specific figurative striving forces, by weight, pull and push or thrust and throw. Frank Fehrenbach situates this observation in the common resonance space of the history of art and knowledge around 1300, focusing his reflections on Giotto's Stigmatization of Francis. After contextualizing the image in contemporary Franciscan hagiography, he includes two fields of the history of knowledge - optics and throwing theory - in whose revolutionary redefinition the Franciscans took a prominent role. The reconstruction of the common problem shows how art and science simultaneously pose the question of the transmission, the continued effect, the conceptualization and the representation of physical and physically effective numinous forces and struggle for answers.
