Announcement: 22.05.2025 Workshop with Juliane Rebentisch: Das ökologisch Unheimliche
6 May 2025
Our environment is deeply familiar to us, yet it increasingly appears threatening, alien, and destructive. According to the Indian writer Amitav Ghosh, no other term describes the strangeness of the ecological crises of our anthropocentric present more aptly than the word »uncanny.«
Based on Juliane Rebentisch's text »Das ökologisch Unheimliche« (published in Berlin Review 8, 2025), which interprets Sigmund Freud's concept of the »uncanny« in contrast to »fear« as an affect that motivates action in the context of ecological crises, the workshop invites participants to discuss aesthetics of the »ecological uncanny« in literature, art, and theory – and their role in developing a necessary sensibility to the environmental and climate crises of the present.
Juliane Rebentisch is Professor of Philosophy at the HFBK Hamburg since 2024.
The reading material for the workshop will be sent by email to registered participants in advance.
